Beth DiDonato of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

On Monday, September 21st, the North Stafford Rotary Club welcomed Beth DiDonato of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for an inspiring presentation about early childhood literacy and the power of putting books into children’s hands.

Beth highlighted how access to books can encourage a love of reading, create meaningful moments for families, and help children build a foundation for lifelong learning.

A Small Beginning with a Lasting Impact

Dolly Parton launched the Imagination Library in 1995 to serve children in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee. Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, she wanted to help children discover the opportunities that reading can offer. That local effort grew into an international program serving children across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.

The program’s approach is simple: mail a free, age-appropriate book each month to enrolled children from birth until age five, regardless of family income. Books arrive directly at the child’s home, addressed to them personally—making each delivery an invitation to explore a new story.

More Than a Book in the Mail

A book gives families a reason to pause, sit together, and share a story. Those everyday moments offer opportunities to introduce new words, ask questions, spark curiosity, and let children’s imaginations grow.

By helping families build a home collection of books, the Imagination Library makes shared reading more accessible. Its mission centers on inspiring a love of reading during the years before children begin school. Funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners helps keep the books free for participating families.

North Stafford Rotary Supports the Mission

After the meeting, the North Stafford Rotary Club presented Beth with a check to support her continued work with the Imagination Library. This contribution reflects our commitment to strengthening our community and investing in opportunities for children.

Beth’s presentation reminded us that supporting literacy is also a way to support families and the future of our community. Each shared story is another opportunity for connection, discovery, and learning.

Thank you, Beth, for sharing this mission with our club and for your work helping children experience the joy of books.
